Questions about Thesis

The game

What is Thesis?

A conversation card game. Each card has an idea on one side, such as Trust, and an everyday thing on the other, such as a Window. You draw a card, choose a side, roll the die, and look at the word from that side. The others ask what they’re curious about.

Who is it for?

Friends, couples, teams, classes, and therapy groups. Read more for friends, couples, teams and classes, and therapy groups.

Can therapists or group facilitators use it?

Thesis is a conversation format. The facilitator decides whether Thesis fits the group, which cards to keep in the deck, and how passing works. We make no clinical claims about the game. More on therapy groups.

Playing

How many people can play?

2–6 players. A bigger group can split into tables, with one deck per table or the online version on a phone.

How long does a game take?

The rule card says: “Play for as long as it feels good.” One round works. So does a whole evening. When the group is ready to stop, each player names one thing they discovered about someone at the table.

What age is it for?

16 and up.

What if a card feels too hard?

Every card has a second side, and you can choose it. Before you start, the group agrees how passing works. A few words are heavy, such as Death and Betrayal. “A short answer is a full answer.”

Can I play online for free?

Yes. The Play page lets you draw a card, flip it, and roll the die in your browser. On a video call, one player can share the screen.

The box and the die

What’s in the box?

50 double-sided cards (63 × 88 mm), 1 fold-up die, and 2 rule cards. See all 50 cards and the product page.

How does the printed die work?

It comes flat on a card. You fold it into a six-sided prism and roll it like a pencil. The faces are MEMORIES · BODY · PEOPLE · VALUES · CHILDHOOD · FUTURE. If the die gets lost, you can roll it on screen.

What does each face of the die mean?

There’s one line for all six: “Look at the word from that side.” Each player decides what that means for them.
