Why Money is in the deck

Money is card 26 and one of two cards in the Money cluster. The other is Enough.

The word made it in because of a small British argument. On a Mumsnet thread, posters disagreed about “skint”, their word for broke. For one person it meant no money at all. For another it meant nothing left over this month. Two people can say the same sentence and describe two different lives.

Read from different places

Money also sits behind big decisions. In a Deloitte survey in Singapore, about half of young adults said they’d delayed major life decisions because of money.

So the card can land anywhere: a first paycheck, a family rule about saving, a choice that waited a few years. Nobody at the table has to agree on what the word covers.

If you’re looking for a way to talk about money with your partner, this card gives you one word to start from. Each of you picks it up from your own side, and the die picks the angle.

The other side: Backpack

Turn the card over and you get Backpack. It was chosen for its link to childhood. In Japan, some people keep their school backpack, the randoseru, into adulthood as a symbol of those years. Backpack can bring school days and childhood.

How to play this card

Draw it. Choose a side: Money or Backpack. Roll the die. Look at the word from that side. Say as much or as little as feels right.

The others can follow up with a line from the rule card, such as Has it always meant that to you?
