Why Work is in the deck

The card started as “Hard work”. It became Work because every idea in Thesis is one word. The older phrase still sits underneath it, and that’s where the split shows.

An opinion piece on work ethic describes the same act read two ways. Staying late out of loyalty looks like a good work ethic to one generation. To another it looks like over-giving that was never repaid. Changing jobs or turning down overtime gets the same double reading.

Read from different places

Work also carries what people want from it. In Deloitte’s 2025 survey of young adults across 44 countries, people asked for money, meaning and well-being together.

There’s an older split too: living to work, or working to live. Someone at the table may hear a first job. Someone else may hear a parent’s job, or work that isn’t paid at all, like caring for someone at home.

Work sits in the Work cluster with Balance, Success and Competition. With colleagues, it’s a card where two honest answers can sit side by side.

The other side: Stone

The other side is Stone. It was chosen for two small stories: a stone picked up on a beach, and a worry stone rubbed for calm. It can bring a place, or a habit of the hands.
